[I] Fw: Abaco charter cruise meeting #1 report

Hi all,

As you were informed earlier, a charter cruise to the Bahamas was being planned.

Steve has asked me to forward to you the current info about the plans.

CL 🙂

Members of JCSPS and WLSC,

Our first planning meeting was held Thursday night, February 11th at the Peerless Resterant in JC. The meeting got underway at 6:30PM. Prospective members from both groups attended and I received regrets from members of both groups expressing interest in the trip that were unable to attend the meeting.

Item #1 was when to go. Early May and early June were discussed. Is seems there are several prospects that need to go after area schools are out. Some because they want to take their kids, others because they work for the

school system. We thought a seven day trip would fit into most peoples work-vacation schedules. The group narrowed available weeks to two. May 27 to June 3rd and June 10 to June 17. I am speculating that having our trip

over the Memorial Day period will make getting airline and slippage reservations more of a challenge. That period may very well conflict with existing family activities and vacation plans here at home. Given those

potential negatives I think our best option would be the June 10 – 17 period.

Item #2 was how to get there. Marsh Harbour will be our Airport of Entry (AOE) and where the charter company, The Moorings ( is located. Yes, you will need a US Passport. There are flights that connect

through Nassau (NAS) but from experience would STRONGLY recommend you NOT connect there. Our local low fare carrier, Allegiant ( does fly to several Florida locations where connecting flights on other airlines could be arranged. The problem with that plan is that Allegiant’s arrival times into those cities would require an overnight say before

continuing the next morning out to Marsh Harbour. That means two hotel bills, transportation, meals and missing two nights in the Bahamas. Looking

at the fare shopping site, Kayak (, flights from Tri City Airport (TRI) to Marsh Harbour (MHH) are available round trip for $833.00.Best times look to be departing TRI at 5:24am and arrive MHH at 1:45pm

giving us plenty of time to provision at the local supermarket, take the 4:00pm vessel orientation and get out to our first anchorage for an evening swim before a sunset dinner aboard. Returning on the following Sunday we could have an after lunch departure at 2:15pm arriving Tri City Airport at 11:38pm (the last plane in) or leave Marsh Harbour at 9:50am getting into

Tri City at an earlier 8:05pm.

Item #3 was reviewing the available vessels and costs. Per The Moorings website ( as I understand it, if you book by February 29th,

2012 and take possession by June 14th, 2012 you save 10%

( charter). If your captain has chartered with them before you get another 5%. I qualify for that last

discount and will attempt to get everyone that break since I am bringing them your business but no guarantees! Wish me luck. Summarizing the

available fleet at Marsh Harbour, there are three power yachts and five sailing yachts available ranging from a 2 cabin, single head to the 4 cabin, 5 head catamaran. Prices before any discount per the 2012 rate publication that I received ranged from $405/day to $1,060/day.

Looking more practically, considering a 10% discount, a 4:00pm departure on day one and 4% tax the week will cost $1,270.00 per cabin for the two cabin and

$1,662.00 per cabin on the largest four cabin catamaran.

Look at the site and make your own selection and deal.

Item #4 was that I am not your tour guide. Several of us have been to the Abacos and have local knowledge on devising an itinerary that will please you and your crew. We hope to get together perhaps in early March after

having a firm count on who will be going to review the locality of the area.

The meeting adjourned around 8:30pm

If you have any questions, shoot me an email. If not the groups hopes you will join us and make your own flight and boat charter arrangements to meet us at the Moorings dock on Sunday afternoon, June 10th 2012 for a great

memory making week of boating with friends in the Bahamas the JCSPS and the WLSC way!

Learn it, Use it, Enjoy it!
