Murdochs Back in the USA!

We left Powell Cay in the Bahamas Saturday morning (June 9) at 8:30 and sailed with occasional motoring to Charleston, SC where we arrived at dawn today (June 12).  We are at the Charleston City Marina tonight and tomorrow night for R&R before we resume our trip north.

We had intended to go directly to Beaufort, NC but the weather forecast was not good, so we stopped here instead.  My guess is that we will motor up the ICW as the winds are to be NE with rain and thunderstorms.

It was not a bad trip; a little rolly at times, mostly downwind.  We hit and maintained 10 kt SOG for minutes at a time in the Gulf Stream off Florida.  Wind speeds ran from 7 to 22 kt with higher gust and lower lulls.  At times we flew all of our sails, at others we were down to just a twice reefed main.  We burned about 10 gal of fuel.  At less than 72 hours, we shaved more than a day off of last year’s passage.  Except for a pair of Steiner binoculars that shattered from a 18″ fall from the cockpit seat, nothing broke.

Having cleared in and napped, I’m off to take a shower.

Back in the USA,

Bill Murdoch
