WLSC Upcoming Events

Ahoy Sailors!

If today’s temperatures are any indication, we are in for a HOT SUMMER!  But if you need additional reasons to come “chill” at the lake, we have some great events planned for the Club in the next couple of  weeks, including opportunities to volunteer a little of your time to give back to the Lake and the Club!

Saturday morning, June 30, 3rd Annual Watauga Lake Clean-up.  This event will start with sign-up at Fish Springs Marina at 9:00 a.m.  (WLSC volunteers meet at Lakeshore at 8:30 and we will pontoon down to Fish Springs). Lakeshore Marina is donating the use of a pontoon boat (or two if we  have enough volunteers) to pick up trash in and around the lake.  Last  year 7 of us picked up about 30 bags of trash in the cove across the lake from the marina and I’d love to see us have even more volunteers and more trash picked up this year!  The Clean-up sponsors will provide gloves and trash bags and there will be a great after-party at 3:00 p.m. at Fish Springs with free food, live blue grass music, and great door prizes for all who volunteer (last year our group received some fabulous restaurant gift certificates as well as tee-shirts, frisbees, and other toys).  Please e-mail me if  you can volunteer for a couple of hours (we will not stay out past noon!) and I will provide more details on our Club’s participation.

Saturday evening, June 30, Evening Sail/Raft-up/Cove Ridge Fireworks.  This is the closest Saturday to this months’ full moon, so come on out for an evening sail and anchor out or raft up with us!  Cove Ridge Marina will be having their annual July 4th display on this night around 9:00 p.m., so we’ll choose a location with good views of the show.  Let’s leave our dock by 7:00 p.m. That should give everyone time to do dinner on their own and still get to our rendezvous point (which will be announced before we leave!).  Please remember to bring breakfast foods if you plan to anchor out…musical instruments, and water toys also encouraged!

Wednesday, July 4th.  Boat Parade, Cook-out and Lakeshore Fireworks.  The annual Boat Parade will start at 2:00 P.M. at the dam and proceed down to the Butler Bridge.  The WLSC has been invited to participate!  But, since our vessels are much slower than those motorized contraptions, we will be like those beautiful palomino horses at the back of the parade!!!  I would love to see us have at least one boat participate in this!  Second Wind’s top speed under power is only about 6 mph, so if there’s a faster boat(s) that would like to represent the Club, please let me know!  I’m sure there are those of us who will help decorate and who can ride along on the bow!

After the parade, we will fire-up the Club’s grill on our dock for a hamburger cookout.  The Club will provide hamburgers, buns, and condiments.  If you prefer,  you can bring your own “grillables”, as there is plenty of room on the grill.  Also, please bring a side dish or dessert to share, your own beverage, and a folding chair.

Lakeshore’s Fireworks will begin about 9:00 p.m. right outside the Marina.

Saturday, July 7th.  3rd Fun Race, Pig Roast on the Point and Mallard Cove Fireworks.  Start the day off with a fun race down the lake and around the island.  Captain’s meeting at 8:30 and horn blows at 9:00 a.m. (More details to follow from Race Captain).

Following in the afternoon is the annual 4th of July Pig Roast on the Point hosted by Bill and Adair Murdoch and a favorite of many of our Club members who only make it to the lake once a year!  Set-up will begin on Friday at noon and take-down will be on Sunday afternoon after a pancake breakfast on the dock.  ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOME to help with set-up and take-down.  I will be sending a separate e-mail with all the details of the Pig Roast, but please let me know if you can come out on Friday or Sunday and give an hour or so of your time helping with this event!

Mallard Cove Marina is having a big party on Saturday starting at 8:00 p.m . with food and music (a fundraiser for 11 year old Kenly Whitehead to help with costs of medical treatment for epilepsy) with fireworks starting at 10:00 p.m.

That’s it for now!  Hope to hear from everyone and see you at the lake this weekend!
