Ahoy Sailors!

Six captains and crew participated in the FUN race last Saturday with very light winds at the start.  About ten minutes after the staggered and slow start, the westerly winds began to pick-up and the J24 and Grampian 30 moved out in front towards the south side of the island.  The effects of the wind shadow on the island’s east side provided challenges for Skip and yours truly with repeated backwinding of the respective head sails, allowing some boats to catch up.  However once clear of the island effects, Skip and his full crew (Patty, James, and Rob) took advantage of the 15 kt winds and ran the J24 close-hauled to the line to finish first in about 73 minutes. Pat Pritchett and his crew on the Holder 20 captured second place, nosing out Russ, Gayle, and Sue Lockett on the Grampian 30. Bill Smith and crew Kip sailed a nice windward leg to the finish line to capture fourth place.
It was nice to see Dennis and Kim Anthony and their family join in on the FUN on their Irwin 30.  Yours truly DQ’d himself during the repeated backwinding episode by running the engine for 1-2 minutes to avoid having the east side of the island named after him. Congrats to Patti who was at the helm of our Catalina 27 and did pretty well.
Our next FUN RACE is scheduled for Saturday August 17.  The plan was to have a race to Mallard Cove for burgers, but with the bridge clearance currently being so low, it looks like we will have to come up with a different plan.  Any interest in having a make-up Ladies Captains Race?  Ladies, let me know if you would like to race!  We would like to have at least 6 boats out for the race.
See ya on the docks on Saturday August 17 at a 9:15 am Skippers meeting.  If the winds are really light in the morning, we may delay this FUN race to later in the day when the winds are expected to be stronger.
