Race Clinic and FUN Race held on August 23

Ahoy Sailors!

Twelve sailors showed up for the Summer Race Clinic held on the docks near the Middaugh table last Saturday.  There was a lot of good discussion about the updates to the Committee Boat Instruction and with a few Rules of Racing explained by Wayne using a white board.  Although planned for just one hour, the clinic went on for almost 2 hours; we all had fun just getting together and talking about sailing and racing.  The updated CB instructions will soon be put on the WLSC website.
Then at 2pm, seven boats participated in a FUN Race with a staggered start.  The leg to the island mark started out very slow in light westerly winds, but halfway down Billy Becker’s Cat 27 started to pull away and rounded the mark first and headed for mountain side in nice brisk wind.  Bill Smith’s Cat 30TM and Clarke Lucas’s Balboa 26 followed for awhile and tacked earlier for the middle of the lake and caught up to the leader.  Then the remaining boats (three 30 footers and one 32) rounded the mark and seemed to catch the wind shifts perfectly as they made up several hundred yards on the return leg.
Congrats to Tony Catoe and crew on the Pearson 30 for taking the lead about halfway back and finishing first in approx 59 minutes elapsed time.  Returning WLSC member Marvin Brown and his son Harrison on the Beneteau 32 finished a close second, followed by Wayne Catoe on the Hunter 30 and Rob Remme on the Beneteau 30E.  It was a FUN race and again the threat of showers never materialized.  The next morning on Sunday, several boats went out to enjoy sailing with 15-22 mph easterly winds.
