Spring Race #1 Results

Ahoy WLSC Sailors!

We started the Skipper’s meeting for the 1st Spring race with the Blessing of the WLSC Fleet given by Roger Fair. So thank you Roger.

Eleven (11) captains and crew turned out for the race on a nice Sunday afternoon. Northwest winds of about 7 kts got the racers off and headed to the dam, only to find the mark had drifted west and close to the shoreline. Thanks to John Middaugh in the lead on Watauga Lady for retrieving and re-setting the mark, then returning to the head of the pack. Winds fell off a bit going back to the pin, and then freshened on the way to the mtn mark, which required a couple of tacks by some racers. Then mostly a broad-to-beam reach to the island, after which most racers were rewarded with a fun close-hauled leg in 10-13 kt NW winds all the way to the finish line. Rob on the Beneteau 30E was first to the island mark but unfortunately lost time favoring the mtn side of the lake.

Congrats to first time A-Racer Billy Becker as he single-handed his Catalina 27 to capture 1st place in the A-Racer class! He won with a corrected time of 4187 sec. Congrats also to Wayne Catoe and crew on the Hunter 30 for earning 2nd place, and to Marc Nachman and crew on the Olson 30 for taking 3rd place and being first across the finish line with an ET of 1:17:56.

Congrats to Clarke Lucas and crew on the Balboa 26 for winning 1st place in PC-Class 2, beating yours truly on the Catalina 30 by 7 seconds corrected time. And good job to John Middaugh and crew for taking 3rd place.

Congrats to Bob Hebner and brother Dave on the Catalina 250 for capturing 1st place in the newly created PC-Class 3! Yes, Bob you WON! It was neat to see Paul Rovegno and Catherine out racing the Precision 185 “Sea Serpent” in their first WLSC Series race too.

The official race results spreadsheet is here: WLSC_Race-Results_2016-Spring-1.xlsx.

Thanks much to Sam Shafer for handling Committee Boat duties, and to Wayne Catoe and Marc Nachman for setting/ retrieving the marks. And special thanks to Jill and Roger Fair for preparing the delicious grilled chicken for the pot luck dinner after the race.

NEXT SERIES RACE: 2:00pm Saturday April 23, a Race Rules Clinic at 12 noon on the deck, followed by the Skipper’s meeting at 1:00pm.

It would be great to see more racers participate in the new PC-Class 3, and in the A-Racer and PC-Class 2 too! So make plans to come out to race on Saturday April 23.

Fair winds to you,

Dave Gurysh
WLSC Race Captain
