Spring Race #3 Results

Ahoy WLSC Sailors!

I guess due to local college graduations and other commitments, only 7 racers participated in Spring race #3 last Saturday.  Those that did were rewarded with a great afternoon of racing in steady 14-16 kt west winds with gusts of ~25 kts.  The PC racers got off to a bit of a late start to the OBS/Dam mark after mixing it up at the starting line with some port vs starboard action, but it took only 17 minutes for Mike Farthing and Clarke Lucas to round the first mark, and even less time for the return leg to the pin.  Skip Green had a 80 second lead on Wayne Catoe when rounding the pin to go to the MTN mark but the Hunter 30 with full sails was able to gain on the J27 with a reefed main on the leg to the ISL mark.  Mike and Clarke were first to round the ISL mark in ~43 minutes ET and head to the finish line.  Meanwhile on the Committee Boat, Billy Becker and I were busy re-setting anchors in the strong winds, and wishing we were out racing.  Skip’s J27 crossed the finish line first with an ET of ~54 minutes, and Mike’s Tartan 30 finished first in the PC class with an ET of ~66 minutes.  All the racers had a great hour or so of racing, and probably were glad that we didn’t call for an extra leg back to the ISL mark.

Congrats to Wayne Catoe and his all-family crew on the Hunter 30 for earning 1st place in the A-Racer class, winning by 127 seconds corrected time.  Congrats also to Skip and crew on the J27 for an impressive performance in heavy wind conditions.

Congrats to Mike Farthing and his crew on the Tartan 30 for capturing 1st place in PC-Class 2, winning by 26 seconds corrected time; Paul Poulakis would be proud of you Mike.  Congrats to Clarke Lucas and his crew on the Balboa 26 for earning 2nd place; he took the inside lane with overlap around the 2nd mark (start pin) for the third time in a row this Spring.  Congrats also to Jeff and Laura Arnfield for earning 3rd place on their Chrysler 26, and for trying to keep the toe rail out of the water.  Bill Smith and his crew also had a good run on the Catalina 30.  It’s great to see several new members this Spring that are available and enthusiastic to crew for the races.

No racers from PC-Class 3 participated in the above race.  Attached is the WLSC_Race-Results_2016-Spring-3.

Thanks much to Billy Becker for the excellent job on Committee Boat duty, and to Wayne Catoe, Mike Farthing, and Skip Green for assisting with setting/retrieving marks.  And special thanks to Betsy Austin and Paul Rovigno for preparing the delicious chicken fajitas and toppings for the pot luck dinner after the race, and to Commodore Anita for all her diligent planning and efforts.
