Fall Race 2016 #1 Results

Ahoy WLSC Sailors!

At least 15 racers attended the Racing Rules Refresher on the deck on Saturday morning.  Then in the afternoon we had a very good turnout of 14 captains and crew for the 1st race of the Fall Series.  The race began in nice brisk WNW winds of 6-9 kts going to the OBS/dam mark with Rob Remme and Bill Smith leading the way for the PC group.  The A-Racers did not have as good a wind on this first leg, especially around the OBS mark area.  The old 3-mark course was used to try to encourage more captains to use their spinnakers, but only Sam (racing singlehandedly!) and James flew their spins in the light air to the island.  Rob Remme and James Little were first to round the ISL mark, followed closely by a mix of two A-Racers and two PC Racers.  Westerly winds picked up to a max of 11 kts on the final leg to the finish line with Tony Catoe enjoying lifts on the south side of the lake.  Then light variable winds returned to provide a challenge to finish the race.

Congrats to Tony Catoe and his crew on his new Pearson 30 for an impressive win in the A-Racer class, capturing 1st place by 2.5 minutes corrected time!  Congrats also to James Little and his crew on his Holder 20 in earning 2nd place.  And congrats to Marc Nachman and his crew on the Olson 30 for taking 3rd place and crossing the finish line first in an elapsed time of 1:13:30.  It was nice to see former racer John McMillan out racing his J22 again and Sam Shafer on his Morgan 32.

Congrats to Rob Remme and his crew on the Beneteau 30 for taking 1st place in the PC-Class 2, winning by 1.1 minutes corrected time and also having the fastest elapsed time of 1:39:45!  Yours truly and crew on the Catalina 30 got passed by Rob in the last 200 yards but we managed to earn 2nd place on corrected time.  Congrats also to Bill Smith and his crew on his Catalina 30 for taking 3rd place, only missing 2nd place by 38 seconds corrected time.

There was only 1 boat in the race from PC-Class 3, but Bob Hebner got hungry after 2 hours out on the water so brother Dave had to bring him in for dinner.  I’m still hoping that more boats from this class come out for the remaining Fall races and get in on the fun.

Attached is the 2016-fall-race-results-1  spreadsheet.

Thanks much to Wayne and Danielle Catoe for the excellent job on Committee Boat duty, and to Bob Hebner, Marc Nachman, and Tony Catoe for assisting with setting/retrieving of marks.  And special thanks to Chris Kirkpatrick and Carl Hacker for preparing the tasty pork tenderloin for the pot luck dinner after the race.

NEXT SERIES RACE: 2:00pm Saturday Sept 24, preceded by a Skipper’s meeting at 1:00pm.

Fair winds to you,

Dave Gurysh

WLSC Race Captain
